Life With a Senior Dog: Buddy's Journey

by Linda Petrey on Jun 05, 2026

Buddy all dressed up.

If you've ever loved a senior dog, you know that caring for them becomes a little more complicated as the years go by.

Our sweet Buddy has entered that stage of life where we're paying closer attention to everything. Every change in appetite, every stiff step after a nap, every good day and bad day gets noticed.

Recently, we've been navigating some mobility issues with Buddy. Like many senior dogs, he's dealing with the aches and pains that can come with aging. We've been working to find the right combination of supplements, nutrition, exercise, and rest to help keep him comfortable and active.

One thing we've learned is that progress isn't always a straight line. Some days Buddy seems to have a little extra spring in his step. Other days, he reminds us that he's not a young pup anymore. The important thing is celebrating the good days and making sure he knows he's loved on the tougher ones.

We've also found ourselves keeping track of more information than ever before—supplements, medications, vet visits, symptoms, and changes in behavior. It can feel overwhelming at times, but it's all part of giving our dogs the best care possible.

The encouraging news is that Buddy has recently shown a bit more energy. We've even caught him doing some light running around the yard with his brother (from another mother) Gizmo. Seeing those moments reminds us why we put so much effort into supporting our senior dogs.

If you're caring for an aging dog, know that you're not alone. Many pet parents are walking the same path, learning as they go and doing their best to help their furry companions stay comfortable and happy.

Give your senior pups an extra hug today. They may move a little slower, but they still fill our lives with just as much joy.

Do you have a senior dog at home? We'd love to hear about them in the comments.
